Every 12 months
New York requires a vehicle inspection every 12 months, and again whenever the vehicle changes owners.

Safety, plus the emissions check
Most New York inspections include a check of the car's onboard diagnostic system (OBD II), which tests the emissions controls.

Some vehicles skip the emissions part
Motorcycles, vehicles under two model years old, vehicles over 25 model years old, most diesels and electric vehicles are exempt from the emissions component.

No inspection, no registration renewal
DMV will not renew a registration unless it has a record of a passing emissions inspection in the last 12 months, or you supply proof of one.

Lost the sticker
A lost or damaged inspection sticker is replaced with DMV form VS-118, or by having the vehicle inspected again.
